Before You Buy Another Stock, Ask AI These 5 Questions

Five questions that could expose hidden risks, plus a free AI research prompt you can use today.

📝 Editor's Note: The Question Most Investors Forget to Ask

Most investors research a stock by asking one question:

“How much money could I make if this investment works out?”

But there's another question that's arguably more important:

“What could go wrong with this investment that I haven't considered?”

That's where artificial intelligence can become an incredibly useful research assistant.

Tools like ChatGPT can help you examine a company's financial statements, question optimistic assumptions, identify competitive threats, and discover risks you might otherwise overlook.

Of course, AI isn't a crystal ball. It can make mistakes, misinterpret financial information, and occasionally invent facts.

But when used correctly, it can help you ask better questions before putting your money at risk.

This week, we're opening the Vault to show you how.

Your company data could be worth $100k–$3 million

There's a new channel of revenue that has just been unlocked for companies with over 20 people that have been around longer than a year.

Few know it, but AI labs now let you monetize your company’s operational data, and they're spending $15 billion this year on it to train the next frontier of LLMs. Your workflows, documentation, processes, and internal convos like Slack are extremely valuable and they're paying anywhere from $100k to $3 million for it per company.

Before you ask, all the data is anonymized and cleaned before it's sent to a Lab. Bezel (Y combinator backed) helps find a data partner that is the best fit for you.

🎯 The AI Investing Opportunity: Become Your Own Investment Detective

Imagine you're considering buying shares of a company that's been making headlines.

Its revenue is growing. Analysts are enthusiastic. The stock has climbed substantially over the past year.

Everything looks promising.

But what if the company's profits aren't keeping pace with revenue?

What if its largest customers are reducing their spending?

What if competitors are developing cheaper alternatives?

These are precisely the types of questions that can get overlooked when investors become excited about a stock.

Here's the opportunity: Use AI to challenge your investment thesis instead of simply confirming what you already believe.

This approach is sometimes called red-team analysis.

Rather than asking AI to explain why a stock might rise, you ask it to build the strongest possible argument against owning that stock.

The objective isn't to become pessimistic.

It's to become better informed.

🛠️ AI Tool of the Week: ChatGPT as Your Research Assistant

Tool: ChatGPT

Cost: Free access available; additional features may require a paid plan.

ChatGPT can help investors:

  • Summarize company earnings reports.

  • Compare competitors and business models.

  • Explain financial ratios in plain English.

  • Identify possible weaknesses in an investment thesis.

  • Develop questions to investigate before buying.

For example, suppose you're researching NVIDIA (NVDA).

Instead of asking:

“Is NVIDIA a good stock to buy?”

Try asking:

“What are the five biggest risks investors should investigate before purchasing NVIDIA stock, and what evidence would indicate those risks are increasing?”

That's a much more productive question.

It encourages critical thinking rather than an unsupported buy-or-sell prediction.

Important: ChatGPT may not have current market data or access to the latest filings. Treat its responses as research leads, not verified investment facts.

🧠 Prompt From the Vault: The 5-Question Stock Risk Analyzer

Here's a reusable prompt you can copy into ChatGPT whenever you're researching a potential investment.

COPY-AND-PASTE AI PROMPT

Act as an independent equity research analyst who specializes in identifying investment risks.

I am considering investing in [COMPANY NAME / STOCK TICKER].

Help me investigate the following five questions:

1. Financial Health: Are there warning signs involving revenue growth, profitability, cash flow, debt, or valuation?

2. Competitive Threats: What competitors, technologies, or industry changes could threaten this company's future performance?

3. Business Vulnerabilities: Does the company face significant risks involving customer concentration, suppliers, regulation, management, or economic conditions?

4. Valuation Risk: What assumptions appear necessary to justify the company's current valuation, and what could happen if those assumptions prove too optimistic?

5. Warning Indicators: What three to five measurable developments should I monitor over the next 6–12 months?

For each question:

  • Explain the risk in plain English.

  • Identify supporting evidence and provide source links.

  • Distinguish verified facts from estimates and speculation.

  • Include the date of any financial information used.

  • Explain what evidence would weaken or invalidate the concern.

Do not invent financial figures or citations. If current information is unavailable, say so clearly.

Finish with a balanced research checklist covering both the bullish and bearish arguments. Do not provide a personalized buy or sell recommendation.

Why this prompt is valuable

It forces AI to look beyond the excitement surrounding a company and investigate the assumptions behind an investment.

It also encourages balanced analysis rather than simply generating arguments that support your original opinion.

✅ How to Verify Your AI Results

Never assume that a polished AI response is accurate.

Before acting on the analysis:

Step 1: Check the company's official filings.

Visit https://www.sec.gov/edgar/search/ and review the latest 10-K, 10-Q, and relevant 8-K filings.

Compare AI's claims about revenue, earnings, cash flow, debt, and business risks against the company's actual disclosures.

Step 2: Verify the numbers.

Use the company's investor relations website to confirm reported financial figures. Check the reporting periods and whether numbers are quarterly, annual, or trailing twelve months.

Step 3: Confirm the valuation.

Look up the current share price, market capitalization, and relevant valuation ratios using a reliable financial data provider.

Remember that stock prices and valuation multiples change.

Step 4: Investigate the risks independently.

Check whether the competitive, regulatory, or operational concerns identified by AI are supported by credible sources.

Step 5: Challenge the AI's conclusions.

Ask:

“Which of your conclusions are least certain, and what additional evidence would change your assessment?”

Vault Rule: If you cannot independently verify an important claim, don't treat it as established fact.

📊 Market Intelligence: The Hidden Costs of the AI Boom

One of the most important investing questions surrounding artificial intelligence isn't simply how quickly AI adoption will grow.

It's how much companies must spend to support that growth—and whether the spending will generate attractive returns.

AI infrastructure requires enormous investments in:

  • Advanced semiconductors.

  • Data centers and networking equipment.

  • Electricity generation and transmission.

  • Cooling systems and related infrastructure.

  • Software development and specialized personnel.

These investments create potential opportunities across multiple industries.

But they also introduce risks.

For example, a company might report impressive AI-related revenue growth while simultaneously experiencing declining free cash flow because its capital expenditures are rising rapidly.

That doesn't automatically make it a bad investment.

It does mean investors should investigate whether the spending is likely to produce sufficient future profits.

One metric worth watching: Free Cash Flow

Free cash flow is commonly calculated as:

Operating Cash Flow − Capital Expenditures

A business can report accounting profits while generating relatively little free cash flow.

When researching companies benefiting from the AI boom, compare free cash flow trends with revenue growth and capital spending.

The relationship can reveal important information about how efficiently a company is converting growth into cash.

🔐 This Week's Vault Takeaway: Reverse Your Research

Here's a simple exercise you can complete in approximately ten minutes.

Choose one stock you already own or are considering purchasing.

Open ChatGPT and run this week's Stock Risk Analyzer prompt.

Then write down:

  1. The strongest reason to own the stock.

  2. The biggest risk that could undermine your investment thesis.

  3. One measurable indicator you'll monitor to determine whether that risk is increasing.

You don't need AI to make the final decision.

You need it to help uncover questions you might not have thought to ask.

That's where the real advantage lies.

💡 One Final Thought

The investors who benefit most from AI may not be the ones who use it to predict tomorrow's stock prices.

They may be the ones who use it to make fewer avoidable mistakes.

Better questions lead to better research. Better research supports better investment decisions.

Until next time, keep learning, keep questioning, and keep unlocking the power of AI.
